The KKIS Project has started back to school with tutors in the classrooms at Pelopidas School in the Guadalupana neighborhood, north and west of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Each classroom holds 42 children which are divided around 7 round brightly colored tables. A volunteer is provided for each table of 6 students. No Spanish language skill is required as we are practicing English with these kids. Our efforts so far this year have been with the 4th and the 5th grade class. Most of the students have been attending this school since first grade, receiving their education in English half of every day. So by 4th and 5th grade they understand a lot and really need practice speaking with a native English speaker.
Curriculum is provided by KKIS Board members to supplement what the children have been studying with their regular teachers. There are two classrooms of students in each grade, so one week we teach the 5 A class and the following week we teach the 5 B class. The lesson plans change every two weeks.
If you would like to help, even for just a session or two, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Marge, at gypsygringa1@gmail.com. Carpools leave from the Mega shopping center parking lot on Ave. 30 and Constituyentes at 12:30 every Wednesday afternoon. We teach from 1 – 2 pm and return by 2:30.
