Teachers and administrators are taking notice: “the children are more motivated than ever before.” said Maria Jesus Burgos Aguilar of the Adriana Kupul Itza primary school in Nicte Ha where last year 456 students received school supplies.

In 2011, a group of friends experiencing life in a foreign country began asking themselves why they saw children on the street and not in school. They found the heartbreaking truth that if a family can’t afford school supplies, their children can not attend school. Determined to do something about this, they began taking applications from families in the El Peten and Guadalupana neighborhoods on the other side of the highway and they raised money through an auction. The first year KKIS helped 258 students with all the school supplies they would need for an entire year, a pair of shoes and a backpack.

Still an all volunteer organization, it is now an accredited Mexican non-profit whose large volunteer base teaches English twice a week at the DIF School on Calle 8 and Avenida 30 and whose generous donors last year provided 682 students at 5 schools with school supplies.

Each year the KKIS Project has increased the number of children they assist. This year, the goal is to supply 900 needy children with school supplies at the start of school next August.

In order to achieve this goal KKIS is holding their 4th Annual Fundraising Auction and Lunch at Wah Wah Beach Club on Calle 2 and the beach at 11am, Wednesday, March 4. There will be a LIVE and SILENT auction at the event and an ON-LINE auction beginning February 10 www.kkisauction.com.

The LIVE auction will begin at noon and lunch will be served at 1pm. Tickets are $20 US in advance or $25 at the door and are available at www.kkisproject.org.
