Playa del Carmen has become a ghost town during this global pandemic with the impact of severe joblessness being felt most acutely among those we serve who are already living on the margins with no safety net.
For KKIS Scholarship students, the very basic need for food has been our first priority. Last week, thanks to your contributions to the KKIS Covid -19 Fund, 94 KKIS Scholars were given $400 peso food-only cards which they picked up at Chredraui stores close to their homes.
Surviving is something these kids are more than familiar with. Our goal is for them to thrive.
Physical Well Being of Students
We estimate 400 pesos will pay for a less than a week’s worth of groceries, but it is a big help for these families. We will keep this fund open until we are on the other side of the pandemic. Thank you for donating!
Emotional Well Being of Students
Understanding that these special circumstances are challenging in many ways for our students, including their mental health, KKIS is providing them with both Daily Activities sent through WhatsApp, as well as opportunities to join live virtual group sessions with Transpersonal Playa, a local psychology practice specializing in teen and family psychology.
Daily Activities, sent by KKIS Operations Manager, Sara Navarro range from things like Tanagrams to home organization tasks to interesting videos. These activities are designed to be calming, helpful, inspirational and can be entertaining for the whole family.
The live virtual group sessions, led by a Transpersonal Psychologist, help students better understand their emotions, how to cope with anxiety, fear, etc. They also include ideas on how to effectively manage time.
If you are interested in subscribing to the Daily Activities email in English or Spanish, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
