Just as the schools had to pivot to an online learning model, KKIS has needed to reimagine the English Conversation Club (ECC) which for the past 3 years involved taking volunteers into public high schools in Playa del Carmen. ECC has no strict agenda, no formula, just small groups of students speaking with volunteers whose first language is English. KKIS provides white boards, markers, conversation starters and simple games. Student practice their pronunciation and get beyond the fear that often holds all second language learners back.
Jeffry, a part time Playa resident and ECC volunteer describes the experience, “It is so rewarding working with the kids and giving back to our part time community. At times you see “a light bulb” go off as they understand the meaning of the word.“
Now Jeffry is one of a handful of volunteers participating in an experimental online ECC that KKIS is rolling out initially just to one school, two days a week. If it works, the program will be expanded to additional schools and add more days.
The way Online ECC will works is this: a link to a zoom call is provided to ECC volunteers and students the day before the session. As they join the call, they are welcomed and transferred to a “break out room”. Like the in-person sessions, there will be no more than 5-7 students assigned to each volunteer.
Ahead of the call, KKIS will provide volunteers with the topics the students are covering in class which they can discuss for 30 minutes and in the remaining 30 minutes, they can lead the conversation using conversation starters and simple games that KKIS provides.
The online format gives more people the opportunity to participate!
We are still looking for volunteers who are native English speakers, have a computer and are familiar with Zoom. If you are interested in volunteering for ECC, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
