Summer school students.

Friends of the KKIS Project, Cesar Garcia and his wife Erica, at Plant for the Planet has been running a summer school for kids at his building in the Mundo Habitat neighborhood in the Ejido of Playa del Carmen. The children have learned about recycling, growing plants, and lots of other stuff. All of their art projects were made with recycled products: toilet paper rolls, plastic bottle of all sizes and shapes, newspaper, etc.

He asked for school supplies for these kids so Thursday night, after school was finished for the day, we arrived with boxes of school supplies and stuffed bags (with the help of his own two children). The bags of supplies were to be a surprise the next day when there would be a graduation ceremony. It promised to begin at noon so I arrived at 12:30 and was provided with a homemade pineapple popsicle while we all waited for the show.

Then the speeches began. I had asked Cesar if there were going to be speeches and he had assured me there would be, and he was not kidding. There were lots of people to thank and many more supporters, even a world champion boxer who lives in Cancun!
Boxing champion!

Boxing champion!

Finally the certificates of achievement were passed to each child along with a bag of school supplies – which were greatly appreciated. Then pizza and tamales and finally a piñata.
