Kids drawing their own spiders.

Kids drawing their own spiders.

These are the students that KKIS volunteers began reading with a year ago when they were in 3rd grade. There was not classroom space available for them at the Pelopidas School, so their classes met in the La Salle high school around the corner. We recognized most of the kids, but boy had they grown and matured. Copies of a National Geographic booklet about spiders had been made and together we read about egg sacks, webs and other spider stuff. We asked questions to assure comprehension and were pleasantly surprised by participation from most of the class.  Then we asked them to draw their own spiders with all the knowledge they had gained.  To break up the afternoon  I taught them the much loved song, Itsy Bitsy Spider, complete with a poster board drawing and velcro sun that came off when it rained and stuck on to dry up all the rain so the spider could climb up the water spout again.  It was great to see these children again and we look forward to working with them again next year as new classrooms have been built at Pelopidas School for both 4th and 5th grade.
