Supporting Education in Mexico: KKIS Packing Event with Girls Just Wanna Weekend 6

January 17, 2024 – Barceló Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen

For the second year in a row, Girls Just Wanna Weekend partnered with the KKIS Project  to make a meaningful impact in Playa del Carmen. This year’s event, held at the stunning Barceló Riviera Maya, blended the power of music, community, and generosity — all for a cause that matters: supporting education in Mexico.

Together with attendees, artists, and the incredible support of the Looking Out Foundation (founded by Grammy-winning artist Brandi Carlile), the event raised awareness and gathered essential school supplies for local students. One of the highlights was a hands-on packing event where over 200 backpacks were filled with notebooks, pencils, calculators, and other tools students need to succeed.

A Weekend That Gives Back

Festival-goers didn’t just come for the music — they came with purpose. Encouraged to bring school supplies with them, attendees responded with overwhelming generosity. With the help of Gloria Goeres, Executive Director of the Looking Out Foundation, and Allison Ponthier, one of the talented artists performing that weekend, volunteers assembled backpacks that will soon be in the hands of students across the Riviera Maya.

Each bag represents opportunity. Each pencil, notebook, and ruler packed is a step toward keeping a child in school. With this initiative, KKIS continues to break down the financial barriers that often prevent students from accessing the education they deserve.

School Supply Donation Mexico

At KKIS, we believe that education is the key to transforming lives. That’s why we provide over 2,500 backpacks annually and fund over 100 public high school scholarships for promising students who might otherwise drop out due to financial challenges.

Our mission is simple: remove obstacles, provide opportunities, and help students develop the skills they need to thrive — not just in school, but in life. Through events like Girls Just Wanna Weekend, we are able to reach more students and involve more community members in the movement to build a brighter future in Playa del Carmen and beyond.

KKIS Vision

Improving lives through education.

KKIS (Keeping Kids in School) works to build stronger communities in Playa del Carmen by eliminating financial obstacles to public education. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn and succeed, and we are dedicated to making education accessible and affordable for promising students in our community.

KKIS Mission

KKIS provides programming that improves graduation rates for promising students and prepares them for life success by offering financial aid, community connections, and educational support. In addition to academics, KKIS helps students develop essential language, life, and work skills to build a stronger community.

Recognizing that education is often unaffordable for many families in Mexico, we remove financial barriers to keep kids in school through generous donations from individuals and companies who share our values and vision.
