Top 5 Bakeries in Playa

With winter holidays and celebrations right around the corner, we felt compelled to share our favorite spots to find the perfect desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth! So without further ado, here are our Top 5 Bakeries in Playa!

Das Brot Bakery

Das Brot Bakery, run by local Anja from Germany is next on our list of Top 5 Bakeries in Playa. Here you can find pastries and bread with her unique touch and hearty flavors. This bakery is a favorite among locals and truly a great find. Come here for some love from the oven especially in the early morning when smell of freshly baked bread comes wafting out of the oven!

Opening hours: Every day from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Must have: Their cinnamon buns are to die for!

La Brioche is a French-style café and restaurant, but it’s delicious French. Here you can enjoy a delicious breakfast and French pastries.

Panificación Castillo

This bakery has a large selection of typical Mexican bakery items but also a few more moist options. Prices are very good here and you can have several bakery items and a coffee for less than a coffee in Starbucks.

Opening hours: Every day from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Must have: Their traditional rosca is loved by locals and foreigners alike and higly anticipated every year.

Location: 10th Avenue between 38th Street and 40th

Café Antoinette

This is another French-style café/bakery that serves up pastries. This is at the south of town on Calle 3 sur just by the Cozumel ferry Pier. So if you are in the area this place is a good place to stop.

All grocery stores have a bakery in Playa Del Carmen and surprisingly enough they all are about the same and make exactly the same things. Mexican bakeries are like this throughout the country. We will note that AKI supermarket is the one bakery we don’t recommend because they are so basic, small and don’t have very fresh things.

Opening hours: Every day from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Must have: Every Christmas they bake Speculoos cookies, which are traditional from northern France at Christmas and made with 5 spices (cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and pepper).

Before You Go!

Did you know that many children living in Mexico are not able to go to high school because they are charged a fee – it is not free!

While 12 years of education in Mexico is compulsory, the average number of years of education is only 9. Students who want to go on to high school need to pay for an entrance exam, school fees, transportation, and uniform costs. We believe in public education. It is not a perfect system in any country, but we believe that all children should have access to 12 years of education.

The good news is it costs less than $2 USD per day to keep a student in high school.

If you are anything like us, you will agree that so much of why we love Playa del Carmen has to do with the amazing locals. So why not do something for the community in return?
