Going for a nice meal out should be a delightful adventure, promising new flavors, vibrant atmospheres, and memorable moments. Yet, for those with dietary restrictions like celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, a foodie adventure can quickly transform into a daunting quest.
Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, lurks in countless dishes, from the obvious loaves of bread to the unsuspecting sauces and seasonings. For the estimated 1% of the global population diagnosed with celiac disease and the many more with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, consuming gluten can lead to a range of symptoms, from digestive distress to neurological issues.
In recent years, as awareness of these conditions has grown, so too has the demand for gluten-free options. Many restaurants now offer gluten-free menus or accommodate special requests.
However, the mere presence of gluten-free items doesn’t guarantee a safe or satisfying dining experience. Cross-contamination, uninformed staff, and lackluster substitutes can all mar what should be a pleasurable meal.
Whether you’re a celiac or simply opting for a gluten-free lifestyle, Playa del Carmen offers a plethora of dining options that cater to your dietary needs without compromising on flavor or authenticity. While entire restaurants may not be gluten-free, these ones are recommended as ones where there are more options, and some great gluten-free trade-offs!
Top Picks Gluten-Free Restaurants in Playa del Carmen
We’ve sorted our picks by cuisines type, so scan our list and see what tickles your tastebuds for your dinner tonight!
Mexican Cuisine
Being in Mexico, let’s start with some delicious gluten-free options for Mexican cuisine. Luckily Mexican gastronomy itself has a wide range of naturally gluten-free options due to the affiliation in this country with corn. Many of the carbohydrates are made with corn and not wheat, which means you can still devour them on a celiac diet!
Sample authentic tacos made with corn tortillas, indulge in flavorful guacamole served with crispy tortilla chips, or feast on delicious carne asadas with a whole host of salsas (these might leave your tongue tingling with their spice factor though!)
Playenses will continually argue over whether Don Sirloin or El Fogon is better for tacos. But there are so many taco stands and smaller venues across town to explore.
You can also try Amate 38 or the local cantina vibe of Don PP for truly Mexican flavors.
Top tip: When heading to a taco restaurant, be sure to check that the tacos are made from corn (ask for tortillas de maiz, and avoid anything on the menu that has the word ‘harina’ which means flour)
