KKIS: Transforming Education in Playa del Carmen
At KKIS (Keeping Kids in School), our mission is simple yet powerful: to bridge the educational gap for promising students in Playa del Carmen. Students who, without our help, would be unable to complete their high school education as they simply cannot afford it.
Why is there a need to help public high school students stay in school? School costs per year are more than many low-wage earners can afford for their children.
Less than 50% of students who finish 9th grade in public high school graduate with a diploma.
Since founding KKIS 14 years ago, Gayle Collins, a teacher for 37 years, has dedicated herself to the KKIS mission, ensuring that every child has access to the resources and support needed to stay in Public school and succeed.
Our core programs include scholarship funds, school supply drives, and mentorship initiatives. These efforts have significantly improved educational outcomes and provided brighter futures for countless students.
- Over 20,400 students have been supported since our inception
- We’ve distributed over 20,000 backpacks filled with school supplies
- 300 students have graduated high school through our scholarship program
- Provided 100 university scholarships
Despite our successes, challenges remain. There is a continuous cycle of students in Playa del Carmen who still face barriers to learning due to financial hardship and lack of resources.

Here are a few events and their results we have had recently:
Randstad Canada came down to Cancun with 253 employees and packed 300 backpacks full of a year’s worth of school supplies for elementary students.
Patch My PC returned for a second year with more than 50 employees to host KKIS and present them with a large check. They also had one of our computer science students as an intern over the last year.
Kelly Services showed up with a small team of 9 people. They created a mini golf course using paper, KKIS backpacks, tape, and a few other craft supplies. Their dedication and support showed us that it doesn’t have to be a large team to make a difference.
Cru Group came with about 30 people and divided into teams. They had to complete team-building tasks to get credits to buy bike items to build a bicycle. Overall they built 5 bicycles and gave them to 5 KKIS students who worked as part of the team. Students rely on bicycles for transportation in Playa del Carmen since there are no school buses.
At a recent event at Xcaret, KKIS put together a 20-minute presentation with its founder, a college student, and the program director to educate the Macquarie group on the impact KKIS has on the community. After the presentation, KKIS was awarded the largest single check we have ever received.
