Should an Education be based on Pesos?
Getting a university degree shouldn’t be about money, yet in Mexico it is. In the Riviera Maya promising students are not able to apply to university if they cannot afford to go.
That sounds crazy to many of us who were able to take out college loans or find other means of paying later for our education. Yet here, you need to pay the bill before you can get in.
So this creates a vacuum in the local community of students to get a higher education with a degree from a university
There are several reasons why students may not go to university in the Riviera Maya region. Here are just seven:
- Lack of financial resources:
One of the most common reasons promising students may not attend university is due to financial constraints. Many families in the Riviera Maya region live below the poverty line and do not have the financial means to cover the costs of tuition, books, and other expenses associated with a university degree.
- Distance from university:
Depending on where a student lives in the Riviera Maya region, they may need to travel long distances to reach a university. Public transportation is not readily available in the “jungle”. This can be a barrier for students who do not have access to reliable transportation.
- Limited career opportunities:
Some students may not see the value in attending university if they do not believe that it will lead to better career opportunities. Depending on the job market in the region, there may be limited options for graduates in certain fields.
- Lack of support from family or community:
Students may face pressure from their families or communities to enter the workforce immediately after completing high school. This can be especially true for students who come from low-income families where the financial burden of attending university falls on the student.
- Cultural barriers:
Cultural attitudes and beliefs may also play a role in whether or not a student decides to attend university. For example, in some communities, there may be traditional gender roles that discourage women from pursuing higher education.
- Language barriers:
Depending on a student’s native language, they may face language barriers when attending university in the Riviera Maya region. While many universities offer courses in both Spanish and English, some students may struggle with language proficiency, which can impact their academic success.

Why Scholarships Matter
Higher education is the key to unlocking a world of opportunities for our promising students. By earning a university degree, students can improve their career prospects, increase their earning potential, and make a positive impact in their communities as well as families
The cost of higher education can be a significant barrier for many students, particularly those from low-income families. There are no government loans or other options for these promising students to attend university without paying out of pocket.
Many families earn less that $300 usd per month and a year of university is $2800 usd.
Scholarships are a critical resource that can help students overcome this barrier and achieve their goals.
By providing financial assistance, scholarships allow students to focus on their studies and pursue their dreams without the burden of overwhelming debt.
Scholarships also help KKIS to provide more students the opportunity to a higher education, making it possible for more students to attend university and create a better future for themselves and their communities.
