Since our successful auction several weeks ago, KKIS has been busy making some very exciting changes. As some of you have heard by now, we have moved our English-teaching volunteering to a new school. Pelopidas was a great partner and it was awfully sad to part ways but an opportunity came up to volunteer at a school where there is a tremendous amount of need.
This new school is part of DIF, the Mexico Social Services System which helps vulnerable adults and children. The kids at this school are ages 10-17, many of them are homeless, neglected, dealing with immigration issues and often from abusive family situations. Most of them don’t know any English and some of them even reside at the school because they have nowhere else to go.
We said our difficult goodbyes to the teachers, administrators and students at Pelopidas a couple of weeks ago. They were appreciative of the work that we have done there and understood our need to move on. Since then we have been working with the DIF school to figure out the best time of day to volunteer at the new school, coordinating those volunteers and working on a new curriculum.
Through the Brillkids Sponsorship Program we received free English speaking software that we downloaded onto donated laptop computers. These computers will be placed in the DIF classrooms and will take our volunteer capabilities and teaching to the next level. We’re excited to see the difference we can make and even more excited to share the progress with you. Stay tuned….
